Barnoldswick is located in the Borough of Pendle in the county of Lancashire, England, is both a market town and a civil parish. Barnoldswick and the rest of West Craven were historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, but have been a part of Lancashire since 1974. Town of Barnoldswick was moved to the Borough of Pendle with the dissolution of West Riding County Council and Barnoldswick Urban District Council.
It is located close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland, both designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty. The town's population is 10,752; Stock Beck is a branch of the River Ribble that flows right past it.
Barnoldswick, 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Leeds, Manchester, and Preston, is the highest town on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, situated on the summit level of the canal between Barrowford Locks to the south west and Greenberfield Locks just to the north east of the town. Weets Hill in the Pennines serves as the natural watershed between the Ribble and Aire valleys.
It is located close to the cities of Skipton (to the east), Clitheroe (to the west), Burnley (to the south), and Keighley (to the east-southeast).
History of Barnoldswick
Barnoldswick's history begins with the Anglo-Saxons. The town's name in the Domesday Book, Bernulfesuuic, literally translates to "Bernulf's Town" (–uuic being an archaic spelling of –wick, meaning "settlement", in particular, a "dairy farm"). Barlick is the local name for the city.
Barnoldswick had the feel of a quaint English village for hundreds of years. However, the town's transformation into a major cotton center was hastened by the advent of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, followed by the (now defunct) railway. Bancroft Mill was the final mill constructed in Barnoldswick, and its 600 horsepower steam engine has been restored and opened to the public as a tourist attraction.
Governance
Barnoldswick now has a town council and is included in the West Craven Area Committee of Pendle Borough Council.
The year 2014 marked Eliza Mowe's tenth anniversary as one of just twenty female town criers in the country.
